Flannelette: Old Stuff Or Modern Classic?

Soft as a teddy-bear, light, sustainable and safe for babies. Flannelette: what is it? A fabric that even our parents would describe as "retro" or "old fashioned". Though with a new generation of people who make an effort to be conscious consumers, it is time for this unique fabric to shine again.

What is the difference between flannel and flannelette?

The difference between flannel and flannelette is mainly that flannel can refer to a wool-based material or a wool/cotton blend. Whereas flannelette is usually made from cotton and brushed to create a softer look and feel. In this day and age, the two terms are often used interchangeably to describe the soft fabric.

Brushed flannelette cotton affords a lovely soft and fluffy texture. The texture is created when the cotton fabric is brushed to create extra softness.

Brushing is a process where a fine metal brush rubs the fabric to raise the fine fibres from the cotton fabric.

What is so special about flannelette?

  • natural, biodegradable, renewable material - cotton
  • hypoallergenic, safe for babies
  • light and warm - can be used year round
  • soft and fluffy as a teddy-bear, gives a special snuggling feeling
  • regulates your baby's temperature, prevents sweating
  • strong and durable

FLANNELETTE’S IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT:

Fiber source: natural, cotton fabric
Biodegradable: yes, if organic cotton is used, it can take as little as 1 to 5 months for organic cotton to completely biodegrade, close to an apple core which takes approximately 2 months
Destruction: moderate, organic cotton uses a lot of water but less than non-organic cotton, can be bleached/dyed with toxic chemicals
Sustainability: good, if organic cotton is used, it is grown on fields where the soil is free of all artificial pesticides or insecticides, “Up to 16% of the world’s pesticides are used in (non-organic) cotton farming every year.  The chemicals degrade soil and pollute water as well as poisoning cotton pickers”, grown without harmful chemicals, doesn’t destroy ecosystems, known to improve soil quality
